MANIFEST Exhibition: Afterimages and Perspectives of Colonial Enslavement

MANIFEST: “Afterimages and Perspectives of Colonial Enslavement,” will be held in Nantes from September 19th to October 6th, 2024. This exhibition marks the culmination of Project MANIFEST, showcasing the final artworks produced by our 22 artists.

An Innovative Perspective on History

The MANIFEST Exhibition aims to provide an innovative perspective on the history and legacies of the transatlantic trade of enslaved people. By placing art at the heart of the evocation of memories and legacies, the exhibition aspires to reconcile individual and collective memories, preserving them from oblivion. Our artists employ new technologies such as virtual reality, podcasts, video, sound and image art to offer visitors a comprehensive, immersive experience. This combination of artistic creation and historical storytelling makes the exhibition accessible to a wide audience.

Why Nantes?

Nantes, France’s leading trading port in the 18th century with 1,800 shipments, has been dedicated to history and remembrance work for the past 30 years. This work is recognised both in France and internationally, with significant involvement from local actors and associations, particularly Caribbean and African communities. The aim is to acknowledge history, confront it, and combat the societal legacies that persist in European societies, such as racism and discrimination. The works created will be fully engaged in the social debate during their presentation in Nantes, a city with a rich historical heritage still visible in its old buildings and the Museum of the History of Nantes.

We look forward to welcoming you to the MANIFEST Exhibition in Nantes to explore the powerful and thought-provoking artworks that reflect on the history and legacies of the transatlantic trade of enslaved people. Join us for this unique opportunity to engage with history through art and new technologies!
